Full Written Review:
If you have been suffering from discomfort/pain, numbness, weakness, or a tingling sensation in your wrists and arms, you are most likely suffering from Carpal tunnel syndrome. This medical condition happens when the median nerve i.e. the main nerve that runs through the center of your wrist and arms gets compressed.
See this image for reference.
There isn’t enough evidence that can link Carpal tunnel syndrome to the use of mouse and keyboard. But, numerous people have admitted that being on a computer or laptop for hours has worsened their symptoms. A study has concluded that almost 60% of office workers suffer from wrist pain. The numbers for back pain and neck pain are even more.
Clearly, there is a desperate need for ergonomic products.
One such product that we are reviewing here is Logitech MX vertical mouse.
To use a conventional mouse, you have to twist your forest and wrist in a position that is not a natural resting position of our body. Keeping it twisted for prolonged hours can obviously affect the related minor and major muscle groups as well as the nerves involved. If you have carpal tunnel syndrome, your symptoms can become unbearable. If you don’t have it, you could end up having it!
Vertical mice are ergonomic products, designed to keep your hands in their natural resting position (handshake position) and yet, letting you work as usual. See the image below:
Now that we know what vertical mice are, let’s look at our top pick, the Logitech MX vertical wireless mouse.
Design
It has a standard oval-shaped base measuring 3 X 3.34”. But, at 4”, the height of the Logitech MX vertical mouse is much taller than that of the conventional mice. The left side is clutter-free but has wavy ridges that are meant to help you get a good grip as well as to hold your thumb and not let gravity weigh it down.
You have three options for connecting it to any device of your choice; bluetooth, Logitech’s Unifying dongle-based wireless receiver, and the USB charging cable.
There are two buttons above the ridges and one at the top. All of them can be used to customize your actions as per your likings. The scroll wheel on the right side is customizable too but the click buttons offer standard functions. Customization can be done via Logitech’s downloadable app. We haven’t tried it yet but numerous buyers have stated that customization is easy and it does help make your work faster.
The button at the top of the handle lets you adjust the DPI between 400 to 4000 dots per inch. If you have a large monitor, you can choose a higher DPI, so you can cover more area with minimum mouse movement. It is specifically helpful for gamers. Moreover, higher DPI means less mouse movement and less strain on the wrist.
However, once you switch off the mouse, the customization resets i.e. you will have to configure it again when you want to use it.
Battery life
Logitech MX vertical wireless mouse has a 240mAh battery, which, as per the manufacturer’s claim, can last up to 4 months on a single charge. We used it for a month and checked Logitech’s desktop application, which stated that it is 70% full. Numerous other buyers have also agreed that the manufacturer’s claim is almost true. Even though the battery survives 3 months, it isn’t a bad deal. Moreover, charging it back takes just a couple of minutes.
Effectiveness
None of us in our team have carpal tunnel syndrome or tendinitis but we do spend roughly 7-10 hours on our PCs. Most of us experience numbness, wrist pain, and forearm pain frequently. Logitech MX vertical mouse has definitely made us feel comfortable. 89% of buyers have rated it 4-stars and above. Thousands of buyers have mentioned that it is much more comfortable to use than conventional mice. So, we don’t have any doubt regarding its effectiveness.
Please note that vertical mice aren’t going to miraculously solve your carpal tunnel syndrome. They are not a treatment option. If you have Carpal syndrome, they can alleviate the pain but they cannot treat it. Some buyers assumed them as a treatment option and ended up feeling cheated. If you have any such condition you must consult a doctor. Logitech MX vertical mouse and all other vertical mice are only meant to help keep your wrist in its natural position, which anyways helps prevent nerve decompression and muscle strain.
Pros:
- Did you know you can simultaneously connect it to three different devices? If you use more than one computer at a time, you don’t have to use separate mice to control them. Logitech MX vertical mouse is enough for three of them. You can effortlessly switch the devices using the switch-selector at the bottom.
- Fits well in small as well as large hands.
- The customization buttons can help many of us speed up our work.
Cons:
- Logitech MX vertical wireless mouse is priced close to $100 and that’s just too much! Not many of us would like to spend $100 for just a mouse. We agree that its features definitely make it worthy of its price but, unfortunately, price still remains a major decision-making factor for all purchases.
- A few buyers have stated that the scroll button starts to squeak after a few months. This is a fairly common issue with almost all mice.
Our Rating: 4/5
Our Verdict:
There is no reason why we shouldn’t be recommending the Logitech MX vertical mouse. It is a feature-rich product meant for anyone who has to spend hours using the PC.
But, we do agree that being a pricey product, it may not fit into your budget. If so, you may check out Anker 2.4G Wireless Vertical Ergonomic Optical Mouse, Jelly Comb Wireless Mouse, and LEKVEY Vertical Wireless Mouse. We haven’t used any of them yet but we have chosen them based on thousands of positive reviews and ratings.
